Single use plastics like these thin grocery bags will be part of Canada's national ban proposed to begin in 2021.

So even though many headlines this week claimed that Canada is banning single-use plastics in 2021, a more accurate statement is that the earliest that the country will ban "harmful" single-use plastics is 2021- but the ban could actually come much later than that. "These are crucial steps we need to take as a country, and I'm proud of our government for stepping up".

The federal government announced a plan to ban single-use plastics by the year 2021, but will apparently consult with the public and with businesses first about what items these will include before enacting the legislation. At the 2018 G7 summit, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom and the European Union adopted the Ocean Plastics Charter, which lays the groundwork to ensure plastics are designed for reuse and recycling.

Heron said these federal moves could encourage more innovative plastic recyclers to set up shop in St. Albert.

He said companies that produce plastics or use them in packaging will be responsible for the collection and recycling of the waste.

"Councils of the past have taken plastic on as an issue and it has been on or radar for awhile", she said. Requiring more recycled content in bottles or other plastic products would create a larger market for recycled plastic material that would in turn, spur economic activity in the sector and an explosion in the number of sorting and recycling plants.

"If it is banned, we are going to learn" how to deal with it, "for future generations", said Evelyn, another resident.

This is to cut down on plastic pollution in the environment which has been seen to harm birds and marine life, and the massive concern of plastics piling up in landfills. The Conservatives have promised to release their policy in the current month.

She said her organization wants to be involved in the process to ensure bans are imposed only where there are "viable, cost-effective and environmentally sustainable alternatives". He also was president and CEO of the Forest Products Association of Canada and of Colleges Ontario, an advocacy organization for the province's 24 colleges of applied arts and technology.

The announcement was not specific as to what items would be included in this ban, leaving the decision for a later time, after some sort of scientific panel or commission reports on what are the most harmful products that should be banned.

Other benefits would be to reduce litter and waste in communities and parks, increase diversion and transfer the burden to producers.

Data from 2017 suggests municipalities could save between $125-$175 million annually once full producer responsibility for the Blue Box Program is put in place.
