  • Aurora partners with Fiat Chrysler over self-driving tech

Fiat Chrysler, the UK-based multinational automobile company, has reportedly struck a deal with Arora Innovation, a startup based in California, to source self-driving technology.

Under the partnership, Aurora will supply a self-driving platform that comprises the hardware, software, and data services that aim for "level 4" autonomy which can navigate without human intervention.

The partnership provides that FCA and Aurora will integrate the Aurora Driver into FCA commercial vehicle lines. It is unclear if the vehicles will be sold outright or operated via a contract fleet, however.

According to sources, Aurora is working on the development of both hardware and software that enables a auto to drive itself. The agreement has been announced soon after Fiat Chrysler broke off talks with Renault for a possible collaboration.

Fiat Chrysler has an existing partnership with Waymo, Alphabet's self-driving unit, in which it supplies Chrysler Pacifica hybrid minivans for Waymo's driverless fleet, which is now in operation in Arizona.

Fiat Chrysler had proposed a merger with Renault in part to enable the two companies to share the substantial cost of developing self-driving cars and electric vehicles.

All three Detroit automakers have teamed up with startups in their pursuit of autonomous technology. Aurora has offices and tests its vehicles in Palo Alto, San Francisco and Pittsburgh.

"Everybody has hit the brakes", said Mike Ramsey, an analyst at research firm Gartner.

In Aurora, Fiat Chrysler is joining forces with a company that got a relatively late start in the field.

Fiat Chrysler will form an alliance with autonomous vehicle start-up Aurora to develop technology for commercial vehicles that could range from hands-free taxis to driverless delivery trucks.

Currently, Aurora is also working with the likes of VW, Hyundai and Dyton.

Aurora earlier this year secured $530 million in new funding that included a "significant" investment from Amazon.
