Fiat Chrysler, the UK-based multinational automobile company, has reportedly struck a deal with Arora Innovation, a startup based in California, to source self-driving technology.
Under the partnership, Aurora will supply a self-driving platform that comprises the hardware, software, and data services that aim for "level 4" autonomy which can navigate without human intervention.
The partnership provides that FCA and Aurora will integrate the Aurora Driver into FCA commercial vehicle lines. It is unclear if the vehicles will be sold outright or operated via a contract fleet, however.
According to sources, Aurora is working on the development of both hardware and software that enables a auto to drive itself. The agreement has been announced soon after FiatChrysler broke off talks with Renault for a possible collaboration.
Fiat Chrysler has an existing partnership with Waymo, Alphabet's self-driving unit, in which it supplies Chrysler Pacifica hybrid minivans for Waymo's driverless fleet, which is now in operation in Arizona.
Fiat Chrysler had proposed a merger with Renault in part to enable the two companies to share the substantial cost of developing self-driving cars and electric vehicles.
