The gorgeous model, whose father is Palestinian, had previously posted herself on Instagram Stories from the lounge of an airport in some country, feet propped up against the window of a viewing area with airplanes as a backdrop, with some rushing to conclude that she was insulting the countries by "kicking" their planes.

Supermodel Bella Hadid has apologized via her social media channels after she posted an image where her foot appeared to rest on planes with Saudi and UAE flags on them, drawing accusations of racism.

It started when Hadid posted a screenshot on her Instagram stories of an opinion piece from the New York Times about the massacre in Sudan asking "Why Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are backing military leaders who kill demonstrators".

The snap shows Hadid's boot against an airport window, with planes from Saudi Arabia and the UAE, flags emblazoned on their tails, on the tarmac underneath.

Showing the sole of your shoe is perceived as an insult in Arab culture and the backlash was immediate with Twitter commenters sharing the hashtag #BellaHadidIsRacist.

Realizing the error, the supermodel took to Twitter and Instagram apologizing for her post.

Addressing the controversial photo itself, she later added, "The photo of my shoe on my Story yesterday had NOTHING to do with politics".

The model added she "would never want my posts or platform to be used for hate against anyone, especially those of my own handsome & powerful heritage".

The model, who has mixed heritage - her mother is a Dutch-born American while her father is Palestinian-American - shared the image to her 27 million followers on Instagram.

Several also called for brands, such as Dior, to stop working with the star in advertising campaigns. She shared her apology in Arabic as well.

Part of her apology read, "I would never want my posts or platform to be used for hate against anyone, especially those of my own handsome & powerful heritage". "To feel as if I have disappointed you is what hurts me the most". I love and care so much about the Muslim and Arab side of my family.

"I have never and will never be the one to talk down on these countries".

The supermodel vowed to be "more responsible when bringing awareness to all causes, including my beloved Middle Eastern community". In a follow-up tweet, she once again promised that the picture was just a big oversight: "this was an honest mistake on an early morning... never, ever would I intentionally try to offend anyone like that".
