Economic hardship and human rights abuse is causing migrants from African countries to fly across the Atlantic Ocean to South or Central America where they can then make the trek to the US-Mexico border, PBS reported.

U.S. Lawmakers who oppose the plan said it was cruel to cut aid to countries grappling with hunger and crime, and that the move would more likely increase the number of migrants seeking safety in the north than decrease it.

One government official announced Monday that the 6,000 National Guard members who officials had repeatedly said would be sent to the southern border will actually be distributed across the northern border and other areas as well, while another suggested measures were showing results.

"What they're doing is having an effect because they're detaining a lot of people, but it's not going to stop", Tomas Leyva, a Salvadoran migrant told the Associated Press. "There (in El Salvador) they say better killed by the gringos than by the gangsters".

Mexico will fully deploy National Guard forces on its southern border with Guatemala this week and will crack down on human smugglers after almost 800 people were found in transport containers headed for the US border, officials said on Monday.

Mexican authorities increased immigration enforcement along well-traveled routes for migrants in southern Mexico over the weekend, checking identifications, pulling migrants off public transport and intercepting four trucks packed with almost 800 migrants.

Mexican police found 785 foreign nationals, many of them children, crammed into eight containers pulled by four trucks in the eastern state of Veracruz on Saturday. It's also happening along the northern border in ME too. Reyes declined to provide additional details of the deployment so as to not alert smugglers.
