Japan issued a tsunami advisory on Tuesday (June 18) after a strong 6.8-magnitude natural disaster hit the north-west of the country.
East Japan Railway Co. said it suspended Joetsu and Tohoku bullet train services. Only a minor swelling of the sea was observed in several cities about half an hour after it struck.
The epicenter of the quake, which occurred at around 10:22 p.m.at a depth of about 10 kilometers, was off the prefecture, the agency said.
In a statement, the group said: "An quake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.8 occurred near the west coast of Honshu, Japan at 10.22pm CHST (2.22pm BST) on Tuesday June 18". Shallow quakes tend to cause more damage on the Earth's surface.
News agency AFP reported a wave of one metre was expected to hit the coast north of Tokyo.
And all seven reactors at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear plant in Niigata were reported off line and there were no abnormalities.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said an emergency response team was set up at the Prime Minister's Office to assess the extent of injuries and damage.
Though there were no immediate reports of any damage, public broadcaster NHK reported that the hardest hit areas had lost telephone service and could not be contacted.
Japan is one of the most earthquake- and tsunami-prone areas in the world. In March 2011, a 9.0 quake struck the north-east coast, triggering a tsunami that killed more than 18,000 people and caused a meltdown at Fukushima power plant.
