Cilic out at Queen's, Tsitsipas through at last

  • Top seed Stefanos Tsitsipas avoided the fate of beaten fellow seeds Marin Cilic and Kevin Anderson in beating Kyle Edmund to progress at Queen's

Second seed Kevin Anderson, runner-up at Wimbledon previous year, went down 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 to Gilles Simon while another Frenchman, Nicolas Mahut, put paid to the hopes of three-times Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka.

Edmund, 24, saved six match points in the 12th game but the Greek clinched victory with a backhand down the line.

His weariness at the end of match - which he freely admitted to in a post-match interview with TV presenter John Inverdale - was understandable given he had started the day still needed to put in half an hour's work to get past British number one Kyle Edmund. The two men edged with relative ease to 5-5, and after another hold from Tsitsipas, it was down to Edmund to take it to a tie-break.

The world number 30 was unable to convert a break point in the seventh game and it proved costly as Tsitsipas eventually ended his resistance by taking his seventh match point in a gripping final game. "I've been watching it as a kid, following this tournament for many years now", Tsitsipas told the BBC, per Metro UK.

And when they returned this morning, the British No 1 knew a fast start was key to any comeback.

The qualifier, ranked down at 191 but always a threat on grass, had just dropped serve early on and made a decision to send down a practice delivery that clipped the ballgirl in the head as she went about her duties at the back of the court. "I didn't play my best, but survived".

But it was in the bottom half of the draw that the upsets quickly emerged.

Defending champion Marin Cilic was cut down to size by Argentine Diego Schwartzman in the second round at the Queen's Club Championships on Thursday as the rain that has dogged the tournament finally relented.

The big-serving 33-year-old South African - last year's Wimbledon runner-up - has missed most of the season because of an elbow injury and his rustiness told as Simon ran out a 6-1 4-6 6-4 victor. He came from behind to beat Chardy 4-6, 7-6 (0), 7-6 (4). He will play the victor of the other remaining second-round match between Felix Auger-Aliassime and Nick Kyrgios, which also continued into a deciding set, in the quarter-finals.
