  • Recep Tayyip Erdogan President of Turkey

In a statement released by the foreign ministry on Thursday, Minister Shoukry expressed "deep denunciation of the recurrent irresponsible statements by the Turkish president, which do not even rise to the level of meriting a serious response", adding that Egypt is "ready to confront any threats, even these hollow ones".

On Wednesday, Turkish President Erdogan alleged that President Mohamed Morsi was "killed" and blamed Egyptian authorities for not taking any measures to save the former head of state.

He said Erdogan's comments displayed "deep envy towards the achievements of the Egyptian people and their leadership of growing gains and successes at all levels".

Morsi, the first democratically elected president, died on Monday after falling into a coma inside his soundproof glass cage during his trial on "espionage" charges.

Morsi, who was serving out a reduced 20-year sentence, was speaking in a court appearance on Tuesday before he fainted and was subsequently pronounced dead in hospital.

Turkey will endeavour to shed light on the suspicious death of Egypt's ousted President Mohamed Morsi during a court trial on Monday, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said.

Erdogan was a close ally of Morsi during the Islamist's turbulent single year in office and since the military overthrew him in 2013, relations between Ankara and Cairo have deteriorated sharply.

At the time of his death, Morsi - a leading member of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood who won the country's presidential election in 2012 - faced a host of legal charges, which he, along with various human rights groups and independent observers, said were politically motivated.

"Morsi was struggling on the floor in the courtroom for 20 minutes".

Reacting to the calls by the United Nations, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry accused the organisation of "politicising" Morsi's death.
