Long working hours could raise stroke risk

  • Working Longer Days Connected With Increased Stroke Risk

The researchers, from Angers University and the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research, looked at data on age, smoking and working hours from a population study of more than 143,000 adults.

And the longer you do it, the higher your risk for a stroke, French researchers said.

Working long hours on a regular basis can increase the risk of stroke, according to a study.

Dr Richard Francis, head of research at the Stroke Association, said: "There are lots of simple things you can do to reduce the risk of a stroke, even if you work long hours".

West Indies vs New Zealand
Defending champions Australia are now at the top spot with five wins from six matches while New Zealand occupy the second spot. They defeated Sri Lanka in their opening match of the tournament by 10 wickets followed by a two-wicket win over Bangladesh.

A French study of more than 143,000 adults, published this week in the American Heart Association's journal Stroke, found people who work for 10 hours or more just once a week, for at least 50 days a year, are nearly a third (29%) more likely to suffer a stroke. "Further research is needed to explore this finding". Of the participants, 29% (42,542 people) reported working long hours and 10% (14,481 people) reported working long hours for an extended period of 10 years or more. They gathered information on the participants' cardiovascular risks, stroke history, smoking habits and the number of hours worked.

Those who reported working 10 hours or more had a 29% greater risk of having a stroke in their lifetime, while those who did so for 10 years or more had a 45% greater chance of stroke.

Not only can working extended hours have negative impacts on your stress levels and mental health, it can also be bad for business in the long run. Study participants were between 18-69 years of age. Researchers noted that it might be because those groups generally have greater decision latitude than other workers.

"Working long hours" was defined as working more than 10 hours in a day on at least 50 days out of the year - that's approximately one 10-hour day a week. To lower the health risks, the researchers advised adhering to the standard 9 to 5 week and eating a healthy, balanced diet.
