Drinking coffee could activate the body's fat-fighting defenses, a discovery that could have potential implications in the battle against obesity and diabetes.

A skinny latte won't help because of the calories in milk, but it's still welcome news for coffee lovers.

It does this through stimulating certain fat cells - known as brown adipose tissue - into releasing their energy.

The team used a thermal imaging technique on four men and five women to trace the brown fat reserves and see how it produced heat.

Its main function is to generate body heat by burning calories - unlike white fat, which is a result of storing excess calories.

"Brown fat works in a different way to other fat in your body and produces heat by burning sugar and fat, often in response to cold", said study co-author professor Michael Symonds, from the School of Medicine at the University of Nottingham.

While these findings are promising, Symonds warns slimmers shouldn't be reaching for the cafetière just yet.

The study only involved nine people and the research is still at a very early stage.

What's more, the researchers are as of yet unsure of exactly what component in coffee causes the weight loss.

Scientists have found that coffee can stimulate "brown fat" - which plays a key role in how quickly calories are burned off. Doctors suggest drinking no more than three cups of coffee a day.
