Some of the remains of Genoa's Morandi motorway bridge are set to be destroyed on June 28 nearly eleven months after its partial collapse during a storm killed 43 people and injured dozens. Some 3,500 people who live nearby had been evacuated as a precaution on Thursday and before dawn on Friday.

Fire hoses spray water to reduce dust triggered by the planned blast which demolished the remaining spans of the Morandi bridge, in Genoa, Italy, Friday, June 28, 2019.

Access to Genoa's busy port has been more hard since the bridge collapsed, which has also caused a lengthy detour for drivers wanting to head onwards to southern France.

Six seconds of controlled explosions wiped out the remains of a collapsed bridge in the northern Italian city of Genoa on Friday, paving the way for a new structure to replace the ageing viaduct that gave way a year ago, killing 43 people.

The dismantling of the remains of the bridge, which collapsed in bad weather on August 14, 2018, started in February.

With the demolition over, officials are now waiting for the arrival of a ship transporting the first parts of a new bridge, the construction of which is scheduled to begin next year.

Residents will be able to return to their homes only after the dust raised by the explosion has finally settled on the ground and after an assessment of the air's quality by environment agencies. (AAP) People watch on as the bridge is demolished. Frightened dogs barked at the noise.

The remains of the Morandi bridge are to be detonated at 9am, with almost 4,000 local residents evacuated, the city authorities said.

World-famed architect Renzo Piano, a Genoa native, has designed a replacement bridge that will feature 43 lamps dotting the span in tribute to those who lost their lives. Traffic on the bridge was very heavy that day, the eve of Italy's chief summer holiday, Ferragosto. The area will be closed off to the public until 2200 GMT and residents will be allowed back to their homes once the dust settles.
