  • The front gates of Buckingham Palace

"The 22-year-old man was arrested at approximately 02:00hrs on Wednesday, 10 July by officers from the Met's Royalty and Specialist Protection Command after he climbed over the front gates at Buckingham Palace".

The details sound pretty darn scary. A source told The Sun that the Queen was sleeping in her bedroom at the time of the intrusion.

The source says the intruder was detained under the mental health act.

The Queen was asleep just metres away during what has been called a "major security breach". He said he had been there a month before, at which time he had a good look around the palace before stealing a snack of cheese and crackers.

The man was able to gain access to the grounds of Buckingham Palace where he allegedly tried to "bang down the doors".

The man had successfully scaled the gates before being caught at around 2am on Wednesday morning, police confirmed, and has been arrested on suspicion of trespass.

Police have said it is not being treated as terrorist-related.

The Queen had just returned home from a trip to Cambridge. In 1982, a man intruded twice on two separate occasions, according to the Washington Post. On his second break-in, the intruder made it to the Queen's bedroom. The Queen eventually woke up when the intruder moved the curtains.

"But everyone knows the Queen was there because the Royal Standard was flying".

"He was determined to get inside the palace and was banging down the doors but, thank goodness, this time everything was locked up".

The latest security breach, one of several, comes almost 37 years to the day when unemployed labourer Fagan broke into Her Majesty's bedroom on July 9, 1982.

During the incident Fagan smashed a large glass ashtray and threatened to slash his wrists.

But the Queen was rescued when she spotted butler Paul Whybrew returning after walking the corgis, and called him in before the long-time aide began speaking with Fagan. He was able to get Fagan out of the room before police arrived.
