  • Two glasses of fruit juice a day may boost cancer risk by 50 per cent according to major study

The questionnaire also included counting their daily sugar intake as well as the amount of artificially sweetened beverages and 100% fruit juices.

Just a small glass of juice or soda a day can increase your overall risk for cancer by almost 20 percent.

"High sugary drinks consumption is a risk factor for obesity and weight gain", she said, and, "obesity is in itself a risk factor for cancer".

The lead author of the study said the findings add to research showing that reducing how many sweetened beverages we drink would be beneficial for our health.

According to New Straits Times, the study which was done in France found out that drinking sweet drinks like sodas and fruit juices is related to a higher chance of getting a few types of cancer.

Some 21pc of the group were men and 79pc women.

The scientists at the French Public Health Agency added that "being overweight and weight gain might not be the only drivers of the association between sugary drinks and the risk of cancer".

For every extra 100ml per day consumed on top of this, a person's cancer risk increased by 18pc for all cancers and, among women, by 22pc for breast cancer.

"Surprisingly perhaps, the increased risk of cancer in heavier consumers of sugary drinks was observed even among consumers of pure fruit juice - this warrants more research", Johnson told the Science Media Centre in the UK. When people drank the same amount of unsweetened fruit juice, they were also more likely to develop cancer, the researchers found.

Sugary drinks have increased in popularity all around the world and these drinks have already been linked to obesity.

Participants, who were on average 42 years old, filled out at least two questionnaires and were followed over a nine-year period.

The study found no link sugary drinks and prostate and colorectal cancers. Brown suggested further research was needed before we know.

"So this means if 1,000 similar participants increased their daily sugary drink intake by 100ml, we'd expect the number of cancer cases to rise from 22 to 26 per 1,000 people over a five-year period".

PARIS, July 11 ― Consumption of sugary drinks such as soda and fruit juice is linked to a higher risk of developing certain kinds of cancer, researchers reported today. But here's the more surprising part: so could fruit juices.

Speaking on behalf of the British Fruit Juice Association, registered dietitian Helen Bond said: "The findings of this observational study completely contradict previous clinical trials on 100% fruit juice which makes me suspect that participants were not correctly reporting their consumption of 100% fruit juice".

Touvier suggested that people should stick to public health guidelines that recommend limiting sugary drinks to a maximum of one glass a day.

The research found no link between diet beverages and cancer. "Instead, rely on water to quench your thirst".

Responding to the study, the American Beverage Association stressed the safety of sugary drinks.
