Down Detector, which tracks outages across Australia, reported a Telstra outage beginning at 2:54pm on Thursday.

"The cause of the problem is under urgent investigation and we are working to have full services restored as a matter of priority", CommBank said.

In a statement to Yahoo Finance, a Coles spokesperson said: "We understand a small number of Credit Union cards may be impacted by an outage affecting some businesses, however at Coles payments can still be processed via EFTPOS".

Caltex said its EFTPOS payments were being affected; Woolworths said electronic payments were being disrupted; while Australia Post said EFTPOS payments over $100 and other banking services were on the fritz, while withdrawals under $100 and all deposits were still working. CommBank app and NetBank are up.

A massive Telstra fault is causing chaos across Australia with thousands of ATMs down and payments rejected at major retailers.

By 6pm, Telstra said it had the problem in hand and that services were starting to return.

Telstra has been blamed for a problem with EFTPOS terminal transactions and the ATMs of some banks.

Australia's banks were hit to various degrees.

"At this stage we haven't received any updates from our Merchant Servicing team confirming if there is an issue", a company spokesperson wrote on Twitter.

Supermarket chain Woolworths said its stores were still trading as they are able to process payments manually, however, when ZDNet walked into its Town Hall store in Sydney, a sign greeted shoppers stating it was trading as cash only.

Affected customers have been urged not to contact ComBank's call centre due to the high amount of calls they are receiving.
