Veteran British actor Freddie Jones has died aged 91

Freddie Jones, the British actor who over a almost 70-year career played such memorable roles as the sadistic freakshow owner in David Lynch's "The Elephant Man", died July 9 in the United Kingdom, according to numerous British media reports.

Jones' many credits included the Hammer horror films Frankenstein Must be Destroyed (1969) and The Satanic Rites of Dracula (1973), Federico Fellini's And the Ship Sails On (1983), the fantasy film Krull (1983), and Barry Levinson's Young Sherlock Holmes (1985).

Mr Jones was most recently known for playing Sandy Thomas in the soap until 2018.

His big-screen debut was in Marat/Sade in 1967 and he also appeared in literary dramas such as Far From The Madding Crowd and Nicholas Nickleby, as well as the 1987 version of Vanity Fair.

Lynch tweeted a tribute to Jones on Wednesday.

Jones's agent, Lesley Duff, confirmed the news in a statement, saying: "It is with great sadness that I can confirm the death of Freddie Jones".

"Had the extreme pleasure of seeing Freddie Jones as "Sir" in the original production of The Dresser at the Royal Exchange Theatre and then the honour of working with him on the movie of Cold Comfort Farm", Fry wrote.

"He passed away on the evening of July 9 after a short illness". He was also the father of the actor Toby Jones.

His first acting credit was on the TV mini series Androcles And The Lion in 1960 and he worked steadily on the small screen, including as Claudius in the TV miniseries The Caesars.
