  • German Chancellor Angela Merkel

The latest episode happened on July 10, when Merkel was receiving Finnish Prime Minister Antti Rinne, during a press conference later that day she assured that she was in good health.

Amid questions about her health after bouts of shaking, German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Thursday sat through national anthems at a ceremony welcoming the Danish prime minister to Berlin. She had to restrain herself by clutching her arms together to keep herself still.

Despite growing public pressure for her to open the books on the state of her health, she continued to be evasive, sidestepping a reporter's question regarding physical exams she was reportedly given on Wednesday.

The Chancellor was first seen shaking uncontrollably on June 18.

The shaking on Wednesday was visible although less severe than during the first episode in June.

All three incidents in which Merkel's whole body shook in public took place as she stood still without talking, and ended immediately once she started walking. "I said recently that I am in a phase of processing the last military honours with President Zelenskiy".

She blamed that first bout of shaking on dehydration, but a second episode struck a week later while appearing next to German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

She also said the trembling occurred due to a lack of water.

"I will have to live with it for a while now, but I am very well and people don't have to be anxious", she added.

Six tourists killed by tornadoes and hailstorms in Greece
Almost 30 people have been hospitalised in nearby Thessaloniki, including a 13-year-old girl from Serbia. Some suffered head injuries from trees and other falling objects, he said.

Merkel has been chancellor for almost 14 years now and is known for her stamina and work ethic.

Public figures' health is generally regarded as a private matter in Germany and the country's privacy laws are very strict on that type of information. Thus, it is not publicly known whether Chancellor Merkel has any serious health problems. She has rarely cut back on her work schedule significantly, except once when she cracked her pelvis while cross-country skiing.

She was again asked Thursday about her health and bluntly responded to a German reporter that she was "aware" that her position requires her to pay special attention to her health.

"My comments on this are done today, and I think my statement that I am fine can find acceptance", she said.

"I am very firmly convinced that I am entirely capable of performing", she added.

Afterward, government officials stated, "The chancellor is doing well; all of her appointments will be kept as planned".

Like yesterday, she repeatedly attempted to clasp her hands in an attempt to futilely stop her shaking.

Frequently called the European Union's most influential leader and the most powerful woman in the world, Merkel has said she will leave politics at the end of her term, in 2021.
