  • NEW YORK NY- MAY 29 Committee Chairman of U.S. House Judiciary Committee Rep. Jerry Nadler speaks to members of the press

Sen. John Kennedy said the Mueller report is "as dead as fried chicken" amid reports that the former special counsel's testimony to two House committees could be delayed by a week.

The agreement to delay the hearings in exchange for extended testimony is not finalized, the sources said, and lawmakers are still negotiating. Under the initial plans, each committee had just two hours with Mueller.

Representative Pramila Jayapal, a Democratic member of the committee, said she agreed with a potential move to allow all members time to question Mueller.

The possible delay scrambles preparations across Washington for what's the one of the most high-profile hearings in years.

Over the almost two-year investigation, the special counsel charged 34 people, including 26 Russian nationals, and secured guilty pleas from seven, including several high-level Trump campaign and administration officials.

Judiciary Committee ranking member Rep. Doug Collins, R-Ga., complained on Wednesday that the panel had been divided into "haves and have-nots".

House Intelligence has 22 members, about equal to the number of Judiciary members who were initially expected to question Mueller. The people requested anonymity to discuss the private negotiations and because the talks were still fluid.

House Judiciary Chairman Jerrold Nadler declined to comment on Friday as he left Capitol Hill.

Saying that Mr. Mueller has already made clear his conclusions, the president added, "You can only get so many bites at the apple".

Democrats want to highlight each of those 10 episodes in their hearing, well aware that most of the public has not read the report. But some of the committee's 24 Democrats and 17 Republicans could still be left out.

"Whenever the hearing takes place, it's important that every single member of the House Democratic caucus who serves on the Judiciary committee participates in the Mueller hearing", Jeffries said.

Rank-and-file Judiciary members were publicly and privately pressing the committee to seek a longer hearing with Mueller.

Mueller's investigation did not find evidence of collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump 2016 presidential campaign. The investigation concluded in March, and the following month the Justice Department released the office's report documenting its work.

While the Judiciary panel is investigating obstruction of justice, the intelligence panel is looking at Russian interference in the 2016 election.
