Trump earlier had publicly blasted the former British diplomat after reports unveiled details of Darroch's telegrams assessing the US government and Trump's administration.

Darroch resigned on Wednesday amid public criticism by US President Donald Trump, who effectively cut him off from the White House.

The Mail on Sunday published cables from Ambassador Kim Darroch describing the Trump administration as dysfunctional, clumsy and inept.

Met police assistant commissioner Neil Basu said in a Friday statement that there was sufficient evidence there had been "damage caused to United Kingdom worldwide relations, and there would be clear public interest in bringing the person or people responsible to justice".

"I would say to the person or people who did this, the impact of what you have done is obvious", he said. "However, you are now also responsible for diverting busy detectives from undertaking their core mission", he said.

But on Friday, Mr Johnson told the BBC a "misrepresented" account of his remarks later relayed to Sir Kim had been "a factor" in his decision to step down. You can stop this now.

The British police has also advised "all owners, editors and publishers of social and mainstream media" not to publish leaked government documents, whether they already have them or are offered to publish new ones. "Turn yourself in at the earliest opportunity, explain yourself and face the consequences".

At one point he also goaded Hunt, asking how long he would keep Darroch in place after vowing to retain him.

Johnson was branded "contemptible" and accused of throwing Darroch "under a bus", by Conservative MPs, while the opposition Labour Party labeled Johnson a "Donald Trump patsy".

The emails, dating from 2017, said rumours of "infighting and chaos" in the White House were mostly true.

"If I were the Metropolitan police commissioner, and I wanted to maintain my credibility and the credibility of my force, I would quickly distance myself from this very stupid and ill-advised statement from a junior officer who doesn't appear to understand much about press freedom", the former chancellor tweeted.

"I wish the British ambassador well", he told reporters. "Just like they have to stop them in our country".

On Friday, President Trump said he wished the former ambassador well and that he had been told Sir Kim had actually said "some very good things" about him.

There will be relief in Whitehall that the row over Sir Kim's cables appears to have had no lasting impact on relations with the U.S., coupled with concern that his resignation may have been unnecessary after all.
