Major 6.6 quake strikes west of Australian beach resort - USGS

Both the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and Geoscience Australia said the tremor measured 6.6 and struck at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), making it a very shallow natural disaster. No tsunami warning has been issued.

As of 2pm as many of 800 people had logged having felt the quake with the Government website with more than 500 being registered on the north west coast.

"It's always hard to say whether it could be a preview to something bigger".

Products were sent flying off shelves in some stores near the coast.

The natural disaster also impacted local businesses, as product was flown off shelves in grocery stores, to bottles smashed in liquor stores and sporting clubs. "[The] auto rocked and [the] ground shook".

Dimas Adipoutra, Duty Manager at Matso's Broome Brewery spoke to us saying they had to evacuate the building. "[The] whole house shook and power is out".

Sergeant Neil Gordon of the Broome police department said the quake rattled the city for more than a minute. It makes it one of the largest earthquakes to hit Australia since records began.

'Crazy feeling, still hearing aftershocks'.

An quake has hit WA with tremors felt from Broome all the way down to Perth.

Shire of Broome chief executive Sam Mastrolembo said the council had been requested by DFES to close tourist hot spot Cable Beach and surrounding swimming areas as a precautionary measure against potential storm surge.

Others said entire apartment buildings in Perth's suburbs shook for as long as three minutes during the quake.

"Just had my first natural disaster on Karratha.We felt it in Karratha".

Jody Gaunt, a resident of the town of Derby, told the Australian Associated Press that she was sitting outside when Sunday's natural disaster hit.

She told The Guardian: "We were sitting outside and our chairs were rocking".

Over in Port Hedland, The Walkabout Hotel employee Shelley said it felt like being on a vibrating machine.

"It came like three waves, quite strong, it's been like 20 years since I've felt one. It just sort of shook the building", she said, adding a colleague thought it was a jet from the neighbouring worldwide airport taking off. She said: "I was outside and I just saw the cars moving".

The Roey Hotel employee Cindy told AAP she saw cars moving in the natural disaster. It was a bit scary.

"It's quite rare ... you might see this event every 20 years. A few things fell off the walls onto the floors", she said.

'It just went for a few seconds'.

Journalist Tex Reeks posted on Twitter: "A staff member from Matso's Restaurant said 'it was shaken like insane, ' as they evacuated diners".

'It was quite nerve-racking. We made our way outside. "It was not too strong, it nearly felt like when you are in a auto and the wind is a bit strong, and then it started picking up", he said.

Strong shaking was also felt in Port Hedland, a town about 290 kilometers (180 miles) southwest of the epicenter.

"Broome just had a massive quake that was unbelievable", a man wrote on Facebook. "Never experienced anything like it before - quite incredible!"

There have been no reported injuries from the quake, a St John Ambulance spokeswoman said.

There has been minor structure damage to buildings around Broome.
