Captain Joey Gamez, of Golden State Sportfishing, had taken a group of anglers out on the San Francisco Bay on Saturday morning expecting to catch mostly soupfin and seven-gill sharks.

The boat was near the infamous Alcatraz island around 11 a.m. when a line that Gamez cast began to pull.

"Once we got it to the top, we realized what kind of fish it was", Gamez said.

"That's a f***ing great white!" several screamed when they finally reeled it in, rushing to immediately free the vulnerable species that is illegal to catch.

The shark's strength eventually led to Gamez reeling in his boat's anchor, a move which subsequently saw the boat dragged for miles.

In an interview with San Francisco Gate, Mr Gamez said: 'Everyone was in shock.

The shark was estimated to be 2.5 metres long.

After local enthusiasts tried and failed to trap the reptile, Frank Robb arrived from St Augustine on Sunday . An alligator floats in the Humboldt Park Lagoon on July 9, 2019, in Chicago.

A video viewed more than 62,000 times on Facebook shows the group struggling to control a rod that was bent in half - with the fish dragging them despite them dropping anchor on their small fishing boat. ".Not sure what it is, but it's a big one".

Indeed, reeling in the beast took all seven of the fishermen, some of whom had never even been out on the water before - so those first-time fishermen may as well go ahead and hang up their rods after this experience.

FISHERMEN in the San Francisco Bay over the weekend had an encounter to remember with a massive great white shark. "We've caught sharks three-to-four-hundred pounds, but we've never caught a great white shark".

They all start cheering and shouting with glee when the seven-foot Great White reaches the surface of the water.

"Everyone was just shocked", said Gamez.

A major part of the rush of fishing is not knowing exactly what is on the other end of the line, like when you return a missed call from an unknown number.

The increase in Great White spottings may be related to warmer weather, which has been increasing water temperature since 2014.
