India's second mission to the moon, Chandrayaan-2, is scheduled to be launched at 2.43 pm on July 22 from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh, the Indian Space Research Organisation announced on Thursday.

Nellore: Isro is planning to launch the aborted Chandrayaan-2 mission in the afternoon on July 22 or before the end of this month.

Dr. K. Sivan, chairman of the Indian Space Research Organization, said that the around $140 million US Chandrayaan-2 mission was the nation's most prestigious to date, in part because of the technical complexities of soft landing on the lunar surface - an event he described as "15 terrifying minutes".

On July 15, ISRO's ambitious mission to land a spacecraft on the moon was called off less than an hour before the launch. If the mission is not launched in July, the next window is in September.

To see the scores level [after the Super Over] and still lose, yeah, that was a pretty unique situation". Obviously, we're all hurting and we're sorry for letting everyone down.

Isro has confirmed that the problem was observed on board the rocket and not the lunar orbiter Chandrayaan-2 or the lander, which implies the mission is not in jeopardy.

If India did manage the soft landing, it would be only the fourth country to do so after the U.S., Russian Federation and China. In its 14-day life, the rover (called Pragyan - wisdom in Sanskrit) can travel up to a half a kilometre from the lander and will send data and images back to Earth for analysis. Chandrayaan-2 will have 14 Indian payloads that will study topography, seismography, and mineral identification, among other things.

Helium is used in cryogenic engines that use oxygen and hydrogen as fuel, such as the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) Mark III that will carry Chandrayaan-2, in pressuring the propellant tank to keep it from collapsing and to prevent the formation of bubbles. The lander, Vikram, is set to touch base near the South Pole of the moon, which is the darker side of the moon.
