Amazon's fifth annual Prime Day, which this year began Monday afternoon, was created to drum up sales during sluggish summer months and sign up more users for the company's membership program.

The company counts more than 100 million subscribers to its Prime loyalty program, which costs $119 a year and provides free two-day shipping, free streaming movies, TV shows, music and other perks.

You'll need to be an Amazon Prime member to take advantage of Prime Day deals.

The three most-purchased items in the USA were the LifeStraw Personal Water Filter, Instant Pot DUO60, and 23andMe Health + Ancestry kits.

Amazon is pushing deals on all of their products, like the Fire TV stick, Kindle and Echo devices that use Alexa. According to Adobe Analytics, U.S. online retailers with annual revenue of at least $1 billion saw sales increase 64% on July 15 compared with an average Monday and 72% on July 16 compared with an average Tuesday.

Extending to 48 hours this year (up from 36 hours in 2018 and 30 hours in 2017), the shopping event lasted longer than it ever has.
