New Zealand stunned defending champions and arch-rivals Australia with a 52-51 victory to win the Netball World Cup for the first time in 16 years in Liverpool.

Victory did not come easily for top-ranked Australia who surged to an eight-goal lead at halftime but had to stave off a determined comeback by the Proteas in the last two quarters.

A lucrative cash carrot has been dangled in front of the Proteas netball team after they qualified for their first Netball World Cup in 24 years in Liverpool on Wednesday night.

The Black Caps cricket team pocketed $3m for coming second, whereas there is no prize money for the Netball World Cup, and the Silver Ferns will likely get nothing for their win.

Australia managed to make it through to the final unbeaten and New Zealand looked to be the underdogs, having lost against Australia in during the group stages.

Kopua and fellow veteran Laura Langman confirmed that they are retiring from worldwide competition after the match, having both debuted internationally back in 2005 - two years after the Silver Ferns' last World Cup win.

South Africa were strong in this tournament, getting within two goals of Australia in the semi-final.

Cape Town - The Proteas netball stars at the World Cup in England are set for a massive payday after their progression to the semi-finals.

Diamonds coach Lisa Alexander opted for the side that beat New Zealand by a single goal on Thursday, with skipper Caitlin Bassett, Steph Wood and Kelsey Browne all restored to the attacking line-up.

Despite evident early nerves, captain Guthrie insisted the occasion had not got to her team, and said it was her intention to rally them for Sunday's game and ensure a place on the podium.

"It was such a close finish and I don't think you could have asked for any more from any of the girls in our team".

"We've all bandied around each other, it's what we do and we go out there and play hard".

"This one we were behind and trying to catch up". We kept getting back into it... we are so pumped.

"I think we need to reward great work when we see it".
