The contractor's server was breached on July 13 by a group of hackers called 0v1ru$, who stole 7.5 terabytes of data from the company's network.

Hackers posted screenshots of the company's servers on Twitter and later shared the stolen data with Digital Revolution, another hacking group who a year ago breached Quantum, another FSB contractor. That group then shared more of the stolen information on Twitter on Thursday and with the media in Russia, ZDNet reported.

The most notable of the uncovered projects was Nautilus-S, which aims to deanonymize Tor traffic using rogue Tor servers, presumable to identify political dissidents, writes Engadget. Digital Revolution claimed to have hacked the Russian research institute "Kvant" in 2018.

Among the internal projects that the Russian media reported on were one to de-anonymize Tor browser users and one to collect data on Facebook and LinkedIn users, according to Forbes.

Nadezhda, or Hope in English, is a project created to visualize how Russian Federation is connected to the rest of the Internet. "Reward" is created to keep tabs on P2P networks, while "Mentor" monitors company email communications.

BBC Russia, who received the full trove of documents, claims there were other older projects for researching other network protocols such as Jabber (instant messaging), ED2K (eDonkey), and OpenFT (enterprise file transfer). There's also Reward, a project for accessing P2P networks; Mentor, which monitors and searches Russian companies' email communications on their servers; Hope, a project that maps the Russian internet and how it connects to other countries; and Tax-3, a closed intranet for storing key information on "highly-sensitive state figures, judges, and local administration officials". BBC Russia pointed out that work on Nautilus-S started in 2012. Early this February, Russia unveiled plans for an internet "kill switch" to protect itself against cyberwars.
