Whirlpool recalls tumble dryers over fire safety fears

Major American multinational manufacturer Whirlpool (WHR) has recalled around 500,000 tumble dryers after the United Kingdom government ordered the group to take action over the models being a fire risk.
The move, which the government ordered in June, marks a dramatic escalation in a long-running controversy over the dryers and the company's handling of an issue that has left hundreds of thousands of potentially risky machines in consumers' homes.
Consumers who own dryers in this category, and which have not already been modified by the manufacturer, are advised to "unplug it immediately and stop using it until it has been made safe". The company has faced criticism over its decision not to recall items that are at risk of fire.
The figure of 500,000 machines is estimated by the government's Office for Product Safety and Standards, although earlier this month Noel admitted to MPs that the total number of faulty dryers in United Kingdom homes ranged from 250,000 to 800,000.
In another statement, he said: "People's safety is our top priority which is why we are expanding this important campaign".
