Walmart tells staff to remove signs showing violence, including video game ads

Walmart is removing promotional displays for violent video games in its stores following the recent mass shootings at two of its locations, along with criticism from lawmakers that such games promote real-world violence.

Moreover, the memo instructs employees to "turn off or unplug any video game display consoles that show a demo of violent games, specifically PlayStation and Xbox units".

Walmart CEO Doug McMillon also issued a note to store employees promising "thoughtful and deliberate" responses to such tragedies.

"We've taken this action out of respect for the incidents of the past week, and this action does not reflect a long-term change in our video game assortment", Tara House, a Walmart spokeswoman, said in a statement, according to USA Today.

The company's policy on sales of video games that depict violence has not changed, nor has its policy on gun sales. It had stopped selling AR-15s and other semi-automatic weapons in 2015, citing weak sales.

The killings in Texas, followed by another in Dayton, Ohio, just hours later that left nine dead, have put the country on edge.

There is no known link between violent video games and violent acts.
