Facebook reportedly gearing up to launch news section

  • Facebook is courting publishers with multi-million dollar deals to launch its news tab this fall

As per the WSJ report, Facebook has already pitched a number of news outlets including ABC News, Dow Jones, The Washington Post and Bloomberg. The Journal report was not clear as to whether Facebook was offering $3m to individual publishers or in total to all news organizations.

The idea of a "News" tab was first suggested by Mark Zuckerberg in April in a video he posted on his Facebook profile.

These deals would let Facebook pull in headlines and previews of the articles from partner publications for display inside a "News" tab in the Facebook app, they said.

Facebook declined to comment but confirmed that the company is working on launching a "news tab" for its service this fall.

- CNN Business' Oliver Darcy contributed reporting. The company had made a big push toward putting news in users' feeds, but it later dropped the plan.

Joshua-Ruiz Jr set up Saudi Arabia rematch
Anthony Joshua's rematch against unified heavyweight champion Andy Ruiz Jr will take place in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia on December 7.

The report comes from the Wall Street Journal, which spoke to a person familiar with the matter on the condition of anonymity.

Last year, Facebook seemed to pull back on its relationship with publishers, with the company's head of news partnerships, Campbell Brown, telling them to get off the platform if they did't like it, and the company slashing Watch funding for news shows back in December.

Facebook has faced criticism over fake news on its platform.

Now, Facebook appears to be willing to try its hand yet again at news, although this time on seemingly friendlier terms.

The proposal already has drawn some harsh reaction, as many news outlets - and journalists - are wary of the plan in the wake a broken Facebook pledge years ago.
