Protesters react after tear gas was sacked by the police during a demonstration in support of the city-wide strike and to call for democratic reforms outside Central Government Complex in Hong Kong, China, August 5, 2019.

Hong Kong pro-democracy activists kept up the pressure on authorities with a colourful "family rally" and a sit-in at the city's airport on Saturday, as protests enter a third month.

This week China appeared to turn its attention to companies it sees as connected to the protests.

Criticism of Hong Kong's crackdown on protests by USA officials has escalated, although President Donald Trump has tended to dismiss the issue in his comments.

Hong Kong protesters readied to take to the streets again on Sunday (Aug 11), defying a police ban on marches in the Chinese-controlled territory and continuing a restive weekend of demonstrations which saw police fire teargas overnight.

"We are very angry about the police over arresting our teenagers", she said. Following a pattern established in past weekends, the demonstrations continued into the night despite police refusal to grant permission for the public gatherings.

Several other exchanges followed, with protesters, wearing helmets and masks, mostly withdrawing when police fired gas or advanced with shields and truncheons, exhausting authorities and leaving the weeks-long stand-off little closer to resolution.

We urge the U.S. to abide by worldwide law and basic norms governing global relations, and immediately stop interfering in China's internal affairs. About a thousand protesters also gathered later in the day in Tai Po, a town in the north of the territory. In a separate incident, tear gas was sacked at protesters who surrounded a police station in the Tsim Sha Tsui district on the northern side of Hong Kong's harbour, opposite Hong Kong Island.

"If the government thinks we'll give up and not come out anymore they're wrong", said student Chris Wong, 20, at Tai Po. Some chide them for playing into Beijing's claim that hostile foreign forces are behind the demonstrations.

That's partly out of concern that protesters' demands for expanded democracy could inspire like-minded officials and intellectuals on the mainland.

Earlier Thursday, the Chinese liaison office in Hong Kong said it had formally protested to the USA over Eadeh's meetings.

Anti-government protests were planned in different locations in the Asian financial hub, including one at the city's worldwide airport for a third day.

On Saturday morning, a group of parents staged a separate march, which received police approval, calling for better protection for children following incidents in which ordinary people have been caught in clashes between police and protesters. "We've experienced Sars and financial crises", she told reporters after the meeting, referring to the respiratory disease epidemic in 2003. Both marches and the airport protests were peaceful.

Beijing today told the United Kingdom to stay out of China's internal affairs after Britain's foreign minister called for an independent investigation into the recent protests in its former colony Hong Kong.

Activists waved banners written in different languages denouncing Carrie Lam, Hong Kong's chief executive, and the police, and handed out leaflets with artwork explaining the recent protests.
