According to CNN, which obtained a draft copy of the order, the White House will ask the FCC to develop regulations aimed at clarifying the laws determining how social media companies are allowed to police speech on their platforms. Social media companies have come under increasing scrutiny since a white supremacist broadcast deadly attacks in Christchurch, New Zealand, online.

"The conversation focused on how technology can be leveraged to identify potential threats, to provide help to individuals exhibiting potentially violent behavior, & to combat domestic terror", White House spokesman Judd Deere posted on Twitter. "We urge internet and social media companies to continue their efforts in addressing violent extremism and helping individuals at risk, and to do so without compromising free speech".

Twitter confirmed to CNET that its public policy executives attended Friday's White House meeting, while the Internet Association, a lobbying group formed by Amazon, Facebook, Google and other tech companies, labeled the meeting a "productive discussion" on combating hateful and violent content online. Trump did not attend. Executives from Facebook, Twitter, Google, Reddit and Microsoft were invited, the Washington Post reported. The companies declined comment.
