  • J.D. Salinger's books are finally going digital

As of Tuesday, four of his much-loved works: The Catcher in the Rye, Nine Stories, Franny and Zooey and Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters and Seymore: An Introduction, will be available as e-books by his long-time publisher, Little, Brown.

Matt Salinger acknowledged that his father likely would have remained a holdout of the digital revolution.

Longtime Salinger publisher Little, Brown and Company says it's the first time that the entirety of Salinger's published work will be available in digital format. He also tempered expectations for the unreleased work, saying the eventual publication "will definitely disappoint people that he wouldn't care about, but for real readers ..." Even as publishers and consumers adopted e-books and digital audio, Salinger's books remained defiantly offline, a effect of the writer's distaste for computers and technology.

Holden Caulfield is finally joining the digital age. "Things like e-books and audiobooks are tough, because he clearly didn't want them". Then, on a trip to China, Matt Salinger witnessed how the country's young people - The Catcher in the Rye's target demographic - nearly exclusively read on digital devices. Then on a trip to China earlier this year, he realized how many young people overseas read books exclusively on phones and tablets and that digitizing his father's works was the only way to get them in front of his core audience.

This fall, fans can visit the New York Public Library to see the first public exhibition of Salinger's personal archives, including letters, family photographs, and the typescript for "The Catcher In the Rye"-complete with the author's handwritten edits".

The decision was made by Salinger's son, Matt Salinger, who helps run the J. D. Salinger Literary Trust, and who, up until now, had shirked the idea of Salinger's work being made available online because of his father's dislike of technology. "I wanted people to know that, yes, he did keep writing, there's a lot of material, and yes, it will be published", he said.
