Frances Crook, of the Howard League for Penal Reform, said Mr Johnson "doesn't seem to understand" how the current justice system works.

Local media have speculated that Johnson, who took over from Theresa May last month as leader of the country and the Conservative Party, is readying for a snap election as the parliamentary deadlock over Brexit drags on.

He said the investment in the prison system, already approved by British Chancellor Sajid Javid, was "long overdue".

"It's not going to deal with real-life crimes and victims". It's a lot of hot air'.

As well this alternative community sentences are being beefed upped.

However, Wera Hobhouse, the Lib Dem justice spokeswoman said the United Kingdom has the largest prison population of any country in Western Europe.

"Dangerous criminals must be kept off our streets, serving the sentences they deserve - victims want to see it, the public want to see it and I want to see it", he said.

Prison Reform Trust director Peter Dawson said any prison reform must begin with "facts" and "stoking up public anxiety" is a poor way to start.

The move follows a series of announcements over the weekend in which Mr Johnson promised to "come down hard" on crime.

However critics warned that there was no evidence that longer sentences would result in a reduction in crime.

"His unequivocal embrace of stop and search is dumbfounding - research shows it does little to prevent violence".

As part of his pledge to crack down on violent crime - the Crown Prosecution service will also get £85 million over the next two years.

A YouGov poll suggests 74% of 2,153 adults in Great Britain back changes to stop and search.

"Up to £2.5 billion will be spent on creating modern, efficient prisons, the prime minister announced today ..."

It is the second time this year that the stop-and-search powers have been extended.

In addition to the stop and search plans, Mr Johnson has announced other measures such as the introduction of 20,000 more police officers.

I am afraid that as a society we have no choice but to insist on tougher sentencing laws for serious sexual and violent offenders, and for those who carry knives.
