  • Chandrayaan-2 leaves earth's orbit makes headway to moon

The Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft left the Earth's orbit in the early hours of Wednesday, almost 23 days after its launch on July 22.

ISRO announced Wednesday morning that Chandrayaan-2 has successfully performed its Trans Lunar Insertion (TLI) - the process of placing the spacecraft on the path to the moon after leaving the Earth's orbit.

Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) chairman Dr K Sivan recently stated that the Chandrayaan weighing 3850 kg was launched on 22 July and it will reach the lunar surface on 7 September.

The final orbit raising maneuver was carried out at 2:21 am, when the scientist fired the spacecraft's liquid engine for about 1203 seconds and put it in the Lunar Transfer trajectory, which would eventually cause it to arrive at the moon. The spacecraft's liquid engine will be fired to insert Chandrayaan-2 into the impending lunar orbit.

A series of orbit manoeuvres was carried out using Chandrayaan-2's onboard propulsion system to raise the spacecraft orbit in steps and then place it in the Lunar Transfer Trajectory to enable the spacecraft to travel to the vicinity of the moon.

Since it's launch, Chandrayaan-2 has performed orbit-raising maneuvers five times between 23 July and 6 August.

ISRO also mentioned post launch that all systems onboard Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft are performing normally.

"Vikram lander will separate from the orbiter on September 2". The ISRO will now carry out lunar orbit insertion.

The launch of Chandrayaan-2 on board GSLVMkIII-M1 at Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Nellore district, Tamil Nadu. Chandrayaan-2 will now approach the Moon on August 20 and finally land near the south pole of the moon on September 7. The last of Chandrayaan 2's Earth-bound orbits has already brought the spacecraft fairly close to the Moon - a 4,13,623-km orbit around the Earth. The mission, if successful, will make India the fourth country after Russian Federation, the United States and China to make a soft landing on the moon.

The rover carries two payloads to enhance the understanding of the lunar surface. The Rs 978 crore Chandrayaan-2 project will take 48 days to complete the task of landing on the Moon. The mission life of the lander is also one lunar day, while the orbiter will continue its mission for a year.
