FAA issues flight ban on 2015 MacBook Pros with faulty batteries

  • FAA Bans Recalled Mac Book Pros From Flights

The FAA said in a statement to Bloomberg that it was "aware of the recalled batteries that are used in some Apple MacBook Pro laptops", adding that it had alerted airlines to the issue.

"Battery-powered devices recalled because of lithium battery safety concerns also should not be carried aboard aircraft or packed in baggage unless the device or its battery has been replaced, repaired or otherwise made safe per manufacturer/vendor instructions".

Apple said in June it would recall a limited number of 15-inch MacBook Pro units as their batteries were susceptible to overheating.

Potential battery fires force Apple to recall 2015 15-inch MacBook Pros Laptops labelled mid-2015 to be sent away for a fortnight.

Bloomberg says four airlines based in the UK, Italy and Canada managed by Total Cargo Expertise recently implemented the same ban. It is "unclear what efforts will, if any", will be made at USA airports, the network added. Nevertheless, this might come as a shock to travelers who haven't been able to get a free battery replacement just yet (affected models with new batteries are still allowed).

If you see that, select and copy the laptop's serial number, which appears in the same popup window. The affected units were sold between September 2015 and February 2017.

The FAA linked to the news of the Apple recall in that tweet. Pictures of a MacBook Pro that experienced this problem show a battery that burned through the laptop's outer casing. In 2016, Samsung Electronics Co.'s Note 7 was banned from United States flights due to a fire hazard after the handset's battery exploded in multiple incidents.

While there have been repeated incidents of phones, laptops and other devices overheating and catching fire in passenger compartments of planes, it hasn't ever caused a fire to spread. There have been at least three accidents, two of them fatal, on cargo airlines since 2006 in which lithium batteries were suspected of helping spread fires.

It also reminded airlines of rules issued in 2016 that prohibit them from transporting any products recalled over safety issues in either the cabin or as cargo until the products have been repaired or replaced.

If your computer is flagged but it has already went to Apple for fix, then you will have to show proof of the fix to the airline people and hope they let you in. Only the headline has been changed.
