The warden at the federal detention center where Jeffrey Epstein died of an apparent suicide has been reassigned, and two staffers monitoring his unit at the time have been placed on leave, the Justice Department said Tuesday. That person also wasn't authorized to disclose information about the investigation and spoke on condition of anonymity.

"The victims of Epstein's global sex trafficking ring deserve justice", he continued.

Justice Department spokeswoman Kerri Kupac added that Barr had appointed James Petrucci, the current warden of the Federal Correctional Institution in Otisville, N.Y., as acting warden at MCC, pending FBI and Office of Inspector General investigations.

"Today, the Attorney General directed the Bureau of Prisons to temporarily assign the warden at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in NY to the Bureau's Northeast Regional Office pending the outcome of the FBI and OIG investigations into the apparent suicide of Jeffrey Epstein, a former MCC inmate", DOJ spokesperson Kerri Kupec said.

Speaking Monday to law enforcement officials in New Orleans, Barr said he "was appalled ... and, frankly, angry" to learn of the detention center's "failure to adequately secure" Epstein.

Some left-wing activists accused the president of endorsing - what they call - conspiracy theories that connect Epstein's alleged suicide to Bill and Hillary Clinton.

In 2007, Epstein and federal prosecutors - including R. Alexander Acosta, who was the USA attorney in Miami at the time and was later a Trump administration labor secretary - negotiated what has been called a "sweetheart deal" that allowed Epstein to avoid federal prosecution for alleged crimes against more than 30 children, in favor of his 2008 guilty pleas to two prostitution-related felonies in Florida state court.

The Justice Department says the warden of another facility in upstate NY has been named the acting warden at MCC.

This move became necessary after a High Court sitting in Kaduna granted the IMN leader and his wife bail based on health issues. A Kaduna High Court had, last week, ruled that the IMN leader and his wife be allowed to seek medical treatment in India.

"Additional actions may be taken as the circumstances warrant", the department's statement says.

The manner in which he killed himself has not been officially announced. He said it appears to him that the Bureau of Prisons is "protecting him and putting the blame on officers".

More details began to emerge Tuesday about the guards who were supposed to be supervising Epstein and the conditions under which they were working.

That deal, he said, "essentially shut down an ongoing Federal Bureau of Investigation probe into whether there were more victims and other powerful people who took part in Epstein's sex crimes".

Although the one guard doesn't now regularly work as a correctional officer, he had previously been one for seven years and specifically requested to work overtime shifts to make more money, one of the people said.

They must also pass a physical-abilities test that measures their "ability to perform the essential functions of a correctional worker", such as detecting movement, climbing ladders and using handcuffs.

At the same time, prosecutors pursued a parallel investigation into whether any associates of the wealthy financier will face charges for assisting him in what authorities say was his rampant sexual abuse of teenage girls.
