New York Giants wide receiver Golden Tate's appeal was denied today by the National Football League, meaning the former Irish star will serve a four-game suspension without pay for violating the NFL's performance enhancing substance policy.
"This morning, I received the unfortunate news that my appeal was denied", Tate said in a statement Tuesday. Tate will reportedly forfeit $465,000 in base salary.
The suspension is due to Tate's violation of the league's performance-enhancing drug policy.
Tate can continue to play in preseason games and practice with the team until the regular season begins.
"This past April, during the off-season, my wife and I chose to see a specialist for fertility planning", the statement from Tate read.

Tate will be able to return to the Giants active roster on September 30 after the team's Week 4 game against Washington. "I immediately discontinued use, I reported the situation to the Independent Administrator of the NFL Policy on Performance-Enhancing Substances, and I spoke with my coaches and general manager". I greatly appreciate the support from the Giants since long before an outcome was even determined.
Tate, who signed a $37.5 million contract as a free agent with the Giants in March, feasted on the Cowboys secondary last September - as a member of the Detroit Lions - catching eight passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns in a 26-24 loss to Dallas.
With Tate out four games and Corey Coleman suffering a season-ending ACL tear, the Giants will be shorthanded at wide receiver to start the season.
Cody Latimer is expected to join the starting lineup during Tate's suspension.
