Sudan military and opposition sign power-sharing deal

During a ceremony to be held at a hall by the Nile in the capital Khartoum, members of the Transitional Military Council and protest leaders are expected to sign documents defining a 39-month transition.

The country's military council signed the agreement with protesters' leaders who camped in the streets demanding Bashir's and his cronies' removal from power and their arrest.

On Aug. 4, Sudan's ruling Transitional Military Council (TMC) and the opposition alliance Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC) initialed the declaration towards a transition to civilian rule following the ouster of long-serving President Omar al-Bashir.

The agreement was signed in the presence of regional and global dignitaries including Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and South Sudanese President Salva Kiir.

"The guns must go silent now and we must pull the country out of this mess to gain peace and freedom", she said.

The opposition coalition is due to nominate a prime minister early next week.

At Khartoum's central market early Saturday, shoppers and stallholders interviewed by AFP all said they hoped a civilian government would help them put food on the table.

Security forces deployed across Khartoum Saturday for biggest global event in years in Sudan, which had become something of a pariah country under Bashir's rule.

Bashir is wanted for war crimes in Sudan's Darfur region by the worldwide criminal court and is awaiting trial on corruption charges.
