  • Uhuru, Kalonzo witness Sudan military signing of transition deal with protest leaders

During a ceremony to be held at a hall by the Nile in the capital Khartoum, members of the Transitional Military Council and protest leaders are expected to sign documents defining a 39-month transition.

The country's military council signed the agreement with protesters' leaders who camped in the streets demanding Bashir's and his cronies' removal from power and their arrest.

On Aug. 4, Sudan's ruling Transitional Military Council (TMC) and the opposition alliance Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC) initialed the declaration towards a transition to civilian rule following the ouster of long-serving President Omar al-Bashir.

The agreement was signed in the presence of regional and global dignitaries including Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and South Sudanese President Salva Kiir.

While it remains to be seen how the transition will change people's daily lives, residents old and young were eager to exercise their newfound freedom of expression.

"Now, thanks to God, I am starting to breathe", said Ali Issa Abdel Momen, sitting in front of his modest selection of vegetables at the market.

The declaration will establish a three-year transitional government and outline who will make decisions.

However, the interior and defence ministers are to be chosen by military members of the council.

They were referring to the alleged role played by his men in the bloody crackdown on a June 3 sit-in that doctors say left at least 127 dead and 11 missing.

Security forces deployed across Khartoum Saturday for biggest global event in years in Sudan, which had become something of a pariah country under Bashir's rule.
