Study author Dr Christopher Vane, head of organic geochemistry at the British Geological Survey, said the research "transforms our view of United Kingdom shale gas reserves".

Any tremor that measures 0.5 or above means fracking must be stopped temporarily while tests are carried out.

Just a week after resuming fracking at its United Kingdom site, Cuadrilla paused operations-yet again-after a tremor estimated to be the biggest yet since the United Kingdom shale gas company began hydraulic fracturing exploration in northwest England previous year. In 60 days of fracking past year, there were 57 tremors in Lancashire.

The shutdown comes less than a week after Cuadrilla started fracking its second well on the site. It was the first fracking to take place in the United Kingdom since 2011, when Cuadrilla was forced to stop test drilling as the process was linked to earthquakes.

However opponents claim fracking can create earthquakes and continues the UK's dependence on fossil fuels instead of focusing on renewables to tackle man-made climate change.

It is "obvious" that fracking can not be carried out without triggering earthquakes, according to Jamie Peters, a campaigner for the organisation. This latest quake is a sign that Cuadrilla just can't stick within the regulations they agreed.

Boris Johnson tells Donald Trump: it's time to help British firms
Johnson also agreed with German Chancellor Angela Merkel that Britain will set out a concrete proposal within 30 days. It is still uncertain whether the European Union and Britain can find a way to avoid a no-deal Brexit .

"52 seismic events in just 6 days of fracking and now the biggest natural disaster at the site clearly underlines that this is absolutely not the time to start weakening regulations".

While British environmentalists, Labour, the Liberal Democrats, and the Greens have all called for fracking to be banned outright, the United Kingdom government said last week it would consider an assessment of data by the Oil and Gas Authority that could lead to a review of the traffic light system amid industry complaints that it is "strangling" the sector.

Seismic activity with a magnitude of 1.55 was detected at Preston New Road at 8.46pm on Wednesday, the company said.

"The equivalent ground motion would be similar to a large bag of shopping dropping to the floor", Cuadrilla said, adding that it was pausing operations and would monitor the situation for the next 18 hours.

It said the well's integrity had been checked and operations would be paused for 18 hours, as per the rules. "All the relevant regulators were informed and we have verified that the well integrity is intact".
