But now, Porsche has shared several images of the car's interior, as well as the philosophy behind its design. Called the Porsche Taycan, the new EV will be based on the Mission E concept that Porsche showed off in 2015. Earlier this week, the company said the Taycan will be the first vehicle with a built-in Apple Music app, and will come with three years of free data and a six month subscription to Apple Music. Porsche says the original inspiration was drawn from the 1963 911, with a straight-edged dashboard providing a sense of width and simplicity.
Interestingly, controls for the stability control, ride height and damper settings have been relocated to the edge of the instrument cluster via touch-controls that also manage the lighting. Controls are operated quickly and devoid of distractions. Drivers can use it to navigate the main infotainment screen or as a handwriting input device. The first and most obvious is a massive 16.8-inch curved display on top of the steering column, which is now the instrument panel. A cowl has been omitted, which ensures a slim and modern appearance.
To prevent glare, the Taycan's screen uses real glass and a vapour-deposited, polarising filter.
In Classic mode, a power meter replaces the traditional tachometer from gas-powered Porsches with a speed readout in the middle of the power circle. Drivers can choose to swap from Classic, Map, Full Map and Pure mode. In fact only the steering wheel seems to be non-touch... The latter has a "distinctive design with visible screw heads and features a typical Porsche round mode switch which can be used to select the various driving modes". The dashboard has the familiar two-element layout with an upper wing and narrow lower wing in the transmission tunnel.
A most interesting feature is an optional touchscreen for the front passenger, which forms part of an integrated black-panel glass band that also houses the 27.6cm central infotainment display.
All user interfaces have been completely re-designed for the Taycan. The air vents can be activated individually via touch buttons instead of manual controls.
It's unlike anything we've seen in a modern auto or electric vehicle, and it simply looks magnificent. On-board apps include navigation, phone, media, comfort and Porsche Connect. With optimized voice control, drivers can access the required function even faster. Yet another, 10.9-inch screen sits atop the other one and gives access to the multimedia system.
The PorscheTaycan interior presents passengers with a modern interpretation of the classicPorsche design, with a "less is more" philosophy applied to minimise clutter and distraction.
