For all of that, Trump disputed reports of friction with other G-7 leaders, saying he has been "treated beautifully" since he arrived.

But US President Donald Trump denied signing off on a joint G-7 message to Iran over its nuclear programme as announced by Macron.

The Islamic Republic official doesn't want to meet with Trump or members of the US delegation, according to Iranian state media.

Trump had been trying to use the summit to rally the other leaders to do more to stimulate their economies, as fears rise of a potential slowdown in the USA before he stands for re-election in November 2020.

Mr Tusk used a pre-summit press conference to taunt Boris Johnson over Brexit and slam Donald Trump for his position on Russia, Iran and the escalating US-China trade war.

White House spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham said: "His answer has been greatly misinterpreted".

Relations between Tehran and the USA have deteriorated significantly since President Donald Trump withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran and reimposed tough sanctions on its oil exports previous year.

A second reporter followed up again, asking if he had second thoughts about escalating the trade war with China.

"Well, we are having very good meetings, the Leaders are getting along very well, and our Country, economically, is doing great - the talk of the world!" he further tweeted. She said the president only responded "in the affirmative - because he regrets not raising the tariffs higher".

Trump also praised Johnson, who recently took office as prime minister, on Brexit, calling him "the right man for the job".

In a separate appearance on Sunday, U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said that Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping had become "enemies" on trade, despite a good relationship in other areas. Sitting across from Trump on Sunday, he said: "We're in favor of trade peace on the whole, and dialing it down if we can".

"My message to G-7 leaders this week is this: the Britain I lead will be an global, outward-looking, self-confident nation", he said.

Johnson, who has said since he took office last month that he will take the country out of the bloc on October 31 regardless of whether a deal can be reached, later retorted that it would be Tusk himself who would carry the mantle if Britain could not secure a new withdrawal agreement. "No I haven't discussed that", he told reporters during a bilateral meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

The movement, which was formed under the slogan "Take Down Macron" (Dechirons Macron), has seen 125 portraits stolen to match the 125 days it took France to overtake its carbon footprint this year, the activists said. "It involves agriculture and it involves e-commerce and many other things".

"I still hope that PM Johnson will not like to go down in history as Mr No Deal", said Tusk, who as council president leads the political direction of the 28-nation European Union. Macron greeted him warmly as a "very special guest", but had already called for an end to the trade disputes that he said threatened global growth.

And even Abe faced his own diplomatic tangle, as South Korea backed out of an intelligence sharing deal with Japan over a trade dispute - and over USA objections.

"As shown by these meetings, we have been conducting very frequent exchange of opinions, as well as visits", Abe told reporters. "I think when they steal and take out, and - intellectual property theft, anywhere from $300 billion to $500 billion a year, and where we have a total loss of nearly a trillion dollars a year ... in many ways, that's an emergency", he said.

In addition to his decision to jack up tariffs, Trump said he was ordering US companies to find alternatives to doing business in China and move operations back to the United States.
