  • Winners from the other categories life sciences and mathematics also took home $3 million

A team of worldwide scientists who captured the first ever photo of a black hole, have pocketed more than $4 million for their efforts.

The Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration (EHT), a global network of telescopes manned by hundreds of researchers, captured the photo in April 2017.

If that wasn't enough, the team, called Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration (EHT), will now be pocketing $3 million dollars.

The Breakthrough Prize annually recognizes achievements in the life sciences, fundamental physics and mathematics, disciplines that "ask the biggest questions and seek the deepest explanations". Other winners included the discovery of cellular signaling mechanisms that create the feeling of pain and the discovery of a new endocrine system through which fat tissue communicates with the brain to regulate food intake.

Yale's Arthur L. Horwich and colleague F. Ulrich Hartl from the Max Planck Institute will share the $3 million Breakthrough Prize, the richest prize in the sciences.

Now in its eighth year, the Breakthrough Prize was launched by Silicon Valley entrepreneurs to recognise and reward the world's top scientists. But that's still more than $8,500 for each contributor, so, not bad. The team then used imaging algorithms to fill in the gaps and piece together the photo.

They will be recognised at a gala awards ceremony on November 3, at Nasa Ames Research Center in Mountain View, California.
