Brexit: UK Parliament suspension begins as Johnson's election bid fails

  • Drama and protests as UK's Johnson handed defeats ahead of Parliament break

Boris Johnson sought to shore up support for his Brexit ambitions by welcoming the DUP to Downing Street, amid Labour claims that a general election "is coming".

Before the late-night vote, the prime minister told the parliament that an early election is the only way to resolve the country's current Brexit deadlock.

So, what may Johnson's next move be?

Johnson, a former journalist who derided the European Union and later became the face of the 2016 Vote Leave campaign, has repeatedly promised to deliver Brexit on October 31.

"The Speaker can not but allow Parliament to have its say on what it wants to do". "But so far the United Kingdom side has not put anything on the table that would make us think this is really what they are aiming at", the official said.

"Given the limited options faced by Boris Johnson, he must choose - does he resign, or does he go into an election having had to ask for an extension from the EU?"

The Conservative-supporting Daily Telegraph, of which Johnson was recently the highest-paid columnist, has focussed on Speaker of the House of Commons John Bercow's decision to stand down on the same day Brexit is delivered. Ministers have also hinted at a potential legal challenge against the law. They could also propose a different length of delay. There has been debate about whether this is possible, but the government has yet to respond directly to those concerns. He said: "The people on the other side of the house who think they have been very clever tonight by resisting a general election can not hide forever from the judgement of the people".

Opposition Labor Party leader Jeremy Corbyn said his colleagues back an election but not until delaying Brexit was secured.

Legislators also demanded the government release, by Wednesday, emails and text messages among aides and officials relating to suspending Parliament and planning for Brexit amid allegations that the suspension is being used to circumvent democracy.

Labour MPs boycotted the prorogation ceremony, a rare parliamentary procedure, chanting "shame on you" as Tory lawmakers filed out after 1:30 a.m.

Johnson said he would go to the European Council meeting on October 17 to get a Brexit deal.

Meanwhile in London, a cross-party group of MPs met on Tuesday to discuss how they might yet get the existing deal through parliament if Johnson fails his renegotiation.

"Parliament and the "anti-no-dealers" have called Boris Johnson's bluff on parliament's suspension and a general election", Scott Lucas, professor of global politics at the University of Birmingham, told Al Jazeera.

Opposition to the backstop was a key reason why Britain's Parliament rejected Mrs May's Brexit deal with the European Union on three occasions earlier this year.

The EU has argued that the Irish border, with its network of hundreds of crossings and no visible frontier, is unlike any border in the world, which is why the backstop is needed.

But Johnson faces a potentially effective informal opposition coalition that would bring together Labour, which under Corbyn has not taken a clear position on Brexit but is opposed to a "no-deal" divorce, the Liberal Democrats and the Scottish Nationalists, which are both strongly opposed to Brexit and smaller regional parties. There could be some leeway in altering the terms of the backstop. "I completely understand why very large numbers of members feel more comfortable to remain in this place".

In addition, there is unlikely to be much time to pass the deal.

Two-thirds of MPs must support an early election, but parliament is now suspended until October 14.
