  • Walker Cup: United States produce superb comeback to retain trophy

Alex Fitzpatrick and Conor Gough each won two matches to help Britain and Ireland take a 7-5 lead over the United States on Saturday in the Walker Cup at Royal Liverpool Golf Club.

That was the score in all four matches on a lovely morning on the Wirral as the teams headed into eight afternoon singles ties locked together on 2-2.

2-up through ten, the Americans dropped a hole at the 12th but a birdie on the 15th restored their two hole lead and they never looked back as they saw out the match 2&1 giving team U.S. its second point.

The U.S Walker Cup team came from behind with a dominant display in the singles at Royal Liverpool as the won for the first time in 12 years on foreign soil.

In the other foursomes, Salinda and John Park beat Sandy Scott and Euan Walker 2 and 1, and Americans Brandon Wu and Alex Smalley edged Thomas Sloman and Thomas Plumb 2 and 1.

The tartan twosome started brightly, covering the first six holes in three-under, before a scrappy run led to them losing 2&1 to John Pak and Isaiah Salinda.

The all-English pairing of Conor Gough and Harry Hall were never behind in their match against Akshay Bhatia and Stewart Hagestad.

Hammer provided the first of those with a 6&5 thrashing of Purcell and Augenstein made certain of retaining the trophy with a 4&3 win against Thomas Plumb. The 18 was halved in par to give both sides a share of the spoils.

Nigel Farage has argued that the Brexit Party should be granted an electoral pact by the Conservatives to contest Labour seats. He said: "Well, Boris has often changed his mind about many things and that's one of his advantages which is very flexible".

But the loss of three holes in a row from the 11 proved to be pivotal as the Americans claimed their first point of the match.

Similarly, Alex Smalley and Brandon Wu dictated play for the US in their match against Somerset pairing Thomas Plumb and Tom Sloman, picking up wins on the seventh and 10 holes to go two-up.

"It really doesn't matter who clinches it", said Augenstein, lost to Andy Ogeltree of Littlerock, Miss., 2 and 1, last month in the United States Amateur final at Pinehurst No. 2.

"We feel a little dejected that we didn't get that last match", USA captain Nathaniel Crosby said.

After being left out in the morning, world No 1 Cole Hammer was sent out first by Crosby against Fitzpatrick while there was also a first taste of action for Amateur champion James Sugrue against Pak.

As for the presence of his brother, Fitzpatrick added: "I saw him sneak under the ropes on one of the tees and I was tempted to go and tell him to get back with everyone else but I let him off with that one". Norman Xiong (3-0-1) also didn't lose a match.

Casey started the final round one shot behind Bernd Ritthammer and Robert MacIntyre and played bogey-free for his 14th title on the European Tour.
