"Very Dangerous": Trump Warns Iran But Doesn't Rule Out Lifting Sanctions

  • Donald Trump on Wednesday warned Iran against further uranium enrichment

Toossi said Washington "greatly undermined its credibility" when Trump withdrew from the nuclear deal unilaterally, making it hard for Iranian leaders to trust the US.

Trump fired Bolton on Tuesday, citing policy disagreements.

"The declared policy of the United States of America should be the overthrow of the mullahs' regime in Tehran", Bolton told a cheering crowd of MEK supporters in March 2018.

Iran has abandoned three sets of commitments relating to its nuclear programme which were laid out in the deal, and on Wednesday Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said further such measures could be taken "if essential and necessary".

Less than 24 hours after Donald Trump sacked his hawkish top aide John Bolton, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif did little to contain his enthusiasm.

Amid the fraught political climate, Trump loyalists signaled he is prepared to meet with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani - something that French President Emmanuel Macron had proposed in an effort to salvage a 2015 nuclear accord with Tehran from which Trump withdrew the United States.

Even as the removal of national security hardliner John Bolton triggered speculation that Trump might soften his approach to Iran, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo joined Israel in alleging "possible undeclared nuclear activities" by Tehran, and the U.S. administration imposed new terrorist designations on leaders of some groups linked to the Islamic republic. His last-minute decision in June to refrain from attacking Iran widened the divide between him and Bolton - Bolton was all-in on a military strike.

Trump trails several Democratic candidates by notable margins in new poll
With doubts continuing to fester about his reelection chances, the president reiterated his assurances days later. The uncertainty about the economy has affected Trump's job approval ratings.

But the president's desire to end America's long-standing military conflicts and strike deals with longtime USA adversaries, such as Iran and North Korea, exposed sharp differences between the two men that lingered under the surface.

However, Iran's envoy to the UN, Majid Takhteravanchi, said Bolton's departure did not change its position that there will be no talks until the economic sanctions are lifted. "We will release our "Vision for Peace" after the Israeli election and work to determine the best path forward to bring long-sought security, opportunity and stability to the region". "If we can't make a deal, that's fine, too".

Bolton's firing came after he protested the idea, according to the report. In fact, Macron maneuvered in recent weeks to try to arrange such a diplomatic breakthrough.

Earlier on Wednesday, Trump did not rule out sanctions relief for Iran, telling reporters: "We'll see what happens".

He added there was no room for talks with the United States while sanctions against Iran remain in place, IRNA said. Bolton famously wrote in 2015, before Iran's nuclear deal was struck, an op-ed in The New York Times headlined: "To Stop Iran's Bomb, Bomb Iran". He also reiterated that lifting USA sanctions would bring Tehran back to the negotiating table with world powers, but the post to his official website detailing the call with Macron did not elaborate on what might be up for negotiation.

On July 1, it said it had increased its stockpile of enriched uranium to beyond the 300-kilogram maximum set by the deal.

"Iran's third step is under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency and also has the potential to be reversed", he said.
