Cops: El Paso 'Hero' Christopher Grant Made Up His Story

  • El Paso ‘Hero’ Arrested During White House Honoring, Allegedly Made Up Story About His Heroism

In an interview with CNN's Chris Cuomo after the shooting, Grant said he was throwing bottles to distract the shooter, who then turned on him and fired.

Grant was hospitalized last month after being shot in the ribs and a kidney in the August 3 rampage.

Grant was celebrated for his actions, and covered by media outlets nationwide, including a short mention by TIME.

Grant and his family were invited to The White House so that he could be recognized for his alleged act of heroism.

"Nobody bothered to check with us", Carrillo told the Washington Examiner.

Grant has a criminal record for theft and evading arrest, and a Secret Service spokesman said he was temporarily detained over the arrest warrant.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, Crusius confessed that he planned the rampage and drove almost 10 hours from his home in the Dallas suburb of Allen to the border city with the intention of targeting Mexicans.

El Paso Police Department (EPPD) spokesperson Sgt. Enrique Carrillo tells TIME that Grant had a warrant for his arrest and was a "fugitive from justice", but the warrants were not issued by the EPPD and Carrillo could not provide the agency where the warrants originated.

And Lacazette is the best player for me: he understands the game perfectly and if he's 100%, he will give us so much. The Spaniard also talked about fellow new signing Nicholas Pepe as he said that the former Lille forward is direct.

Grant's family didn't immediately return a message from The Washington Post late on Wednesday.

The White House event went ahead as planned. He was not charged.

Crusius is accused of driving 11 hours from his hometown of Allen, Texas, near Dallas, to El Paso on August 3 and firing at shoppers with an AK47 rifle inside a Walmart store, after which he surrendered to officers who confronted him outside the store. But they declined to describe what action, if any, Grant took, or comment on any interaction he might have had with the gunman. "It contradicts his statements, in fact... [H] e did not take any action towards the shooter".

Carrillo said surveillance footage shows Grant acting in "a manner of self-preservation, as best as I can describe it, and nothing else".

He added: "His statements were inconsistent with what was revealed on video".

El Paso police say surveillance video does not back up the story told by a man who was honored this week at the White House for his actions during the August 3 mass shooting at a Walmart.

Chris Grant, 50, was one of 11 people set to be honored Monday by President Trump for their bravery in the midst of the El Paso and Dayton mass shootings, which happened within hours of each other.

From his hospital bed, Chris Grant told CNN he drew the gunman's fire by throwing bottles at him.
