Thousands of young people across the globe are participating in a day of protest calling for urgent action to fight climate change in what organizers are calling the Global Climate Strike. The protest might have far reaching consequences in forcing various governments of not to take climate change lightly, said the climate change activist.

Because this is a youth-led protest, New York City has offered blanket permission for students to miss school.

"It's a shame that a few months back, Guelph made a decision to acknowledge a climate crisis rather than declaring a climate emergency so today we're here to be loud and show the government we care", said Hassan.

The strike's figurehead is 16-year-old Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, who traveled from Sweden to NY on an emission-free sailboat.

"Australia is setting the standard", Thunberg said on Twitter.

Thousands of children, students, and citizens from around Portland rallied as a part of the worldwide climate strike to demand action on climate change.

It began a year ago when Thunberg started taking time off of school in August to demonstrate outside of Swedish parliament and it quickly grew to become a global youth movement.

Thunberg has staged weekly demonstrations over the past year under the hashtag #FridaysForFuture, and the website lists more than 100 climate strikes that are planned across Canada. About 44% of the population of Ghana have not heard of climate change, one study by Afrobarometer suggests.

Greta sailed to the United States on a racing sailboat. McCormack called the climate rallies " a disruption" that should have been held on a weekend to avoid inconveniences.

RNZ joins more than 250 media organisations from around the world in the Covering Climate Now (CCN) initiative by committing to heighten climate coverage in the week leading up to the UN Climate Action Summit on 23 September 2019.

Students across Canada expected to participate in mass climate protests

Already, the strikes could be working on some businesses.

Multiple groups, including the youth climate advocacy nonprofit Sunrise Movement, organized the protest in St. Louis.

Globally, 72 trade unions and federations are supporting the strikes. Burlington School District Superintendent Yaw Obeng says any student that wants to participate will have their absences excused.

Some four million people filled city streets around the world. Opting not to fly, given the carbon emissions of commercial jetliners, she sailed from Europe.

"I'm also a really big fan of op-shopping because it saves you money and helps the environment at the same time", she said.

She sailed into NY on a zero-carbon yacht last month after refusing to fly because of the carbon emissions caused by planes. On Friday evening, hundreds more reinforced that message at Mill Creek Park near the Country Club Plaza.

Greta: I would want [the world] to have taken the responsibility and listen to the science, and together with experts and scientists, developed a plan and how to take the measures required to safeguard the conditions for future and present generations.

One of those rallies happened in Colorado Springs with hundreds of students, parents, and community members filling the steps at city hall. San Diego was one of more than 3,600 locations that held the global Climate Change Walkout.

"Uganda is facing serious frequent droughts every year, our temperatures are rising".

Daisy Jeffrey says she'll strike until sensible climate policy is enacted.
