US 'Posturing' by Sending Troops to Saudi Arabia: Zarif

  • Iran vows to protect Persian Gulf as US beefs up troop presence

Iran's president called Sunday on Western powers to leave the security of the Persian Gulf to regional nations led by Tehran, criticizing a new USA -led coalition patrolling the region's waterways as nationwide parades showcased the Islamic Republic's military arsenal.

"But this is risky and unacceptable as an attempt at blocking. the Iranian people's access to food and medicine", Zarif said, speaking after arriving in NY for the annual UN General Assembly next week.

"I hope the USA government realises that they are no longer the only economic superpower in the world and that there are many countries that want to benefit from the Iranian market", Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi said, according to state media.

The United States withdrew from the accord previous year and re-imposed unilateral sanctions on Iran.

"That means that there won't be a limited war", Zarif said, echoing his previous comments that a military strike on Iran by the United States or Saudi Arabia would result in an "all-out war".

14 attacks by Houthis on Saudi Arabia's Abqaiq plant and its Khurais oil field that adversely affected up to half of the supplies from the world's biggest oil exporter.

Washington later expanded its long list of sanctions against Tehran by further targeting its central bank, as Trump indicated he did not plan to strike back.

In the wake of last week's attack, President Trump has deployed troops and military equipment to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

"If they continue along this path, then they risk the possibility of military action".

"Your presence has always brought pain and misery. The farther you keep yourselves from our region and our nations, the more security there will be for our region".

Iran accuses foreign forces of raising Gulf 'insecurity'
The annual military parade marks the start of the week commemorating Iran's 1980-1988 war with Iraq known as the "sacred defence". President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew America from the deal over a year ago, and re-imposed crippling sanctions on Iran.

Asked if he was confident Iran could avoid a war, Zarif said, "I'm confident that we will not start one but I'm confident that whoever starts one will not be the one who finishes it".

"Today, the Islamic Republic of Iran's defence power is at its highest possible level and forces of the army and [Revolutionary Guards] are ready to defend marine borders of the country".

Rouhani is expected to travel to NY on Monday, a day before general debate kicks off at the UN General Assembly.

Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, who is subject to U.S. sanctions, has already arrived in NY.

"We will never allow any war to encroach upon Iran's territory". "If they are truthful and really seek security in the region, they must not send weapons, fighter jets, bombs and risky arms to the region".

Following the deployments, commercial ships were mysteriously attacked, drones downed and oil tankers seized in Gulf waters.

The attacks have raised fears of a military confrontation between Iran and the United States, especially after the Tehran downed a USA drone in June.

The attacks, the worst on Gulf oil infrastructure since Iraq's Saddam Hussein torched Kuwaiti oilfields in 1991, have been claimed by Yemen's Houthi rebels, who have been fighting Saudi Arabia since 2015.

If true, that appears to rule out Yemen which lies to the south of Saudi Arabia.
