Aleph Farms succesfully produces cell-grown meat in space

  • Scientists have successfully cultured bovine cells on board the International Space Station

Aleph Farms collaborated with the Russian company 3D Bioprinting Solutions and two USA -based food companies to test this method in space.

Israeli meat grower Aleph Farms tweeted yesterday that they have successfully grown meat on the International Space Station: 'In a joint experiment on [the] International Space Station, we successfully produced cultivated meat regardless to the availability of land and local water resources.

Perhaps that's why scientists are looking for ways to "grow" real meat in space-by mimicking the natural process of muscle tissue regeneration inside an animal's body.

Cosmonaut Oleg Skripochka conducting the "cultivated beef steak" experiment aboard the International Space Station on September 26, 2019.

While the worlds of space travel and bioprinting have been intertwined for some time, they are both now colliding with the world of artificially grown meat. Bioprinting is a process in which biomaterials, like animal cells, are mixed with growth factors and the material "bioink", and "printed" into a layered structure.

Subsequent, the small-scale muscle-tissue was positioned beneath zero-gravity circumstances and assembled in a 3D bioprinter.

The experiment was marketed as being about devising the astronauts' food of the future.

However, there are other, more far-reaching goals of creating a sustainable food future for the growing world population.

Aleph Farms is one of several biotechs aiming to change the way we produce meat.

On Earth, only certain Bovine cells were amassed.

Food tech startup Aleph Farms has become the first to produce lab-grown meat - also called clean meat and cultured meat - in space. Animal farming, as it is noted in the 2019 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change special report, with its requirement for huge amounts of water and energy, contributes in a significant way to climate change.

"We are working on a new method to produce the same meat, but in a way that uses less than half of the greenhouse gasses", said Didier Toubia, co-founder and chief executive officer of Aleph Farms, noting that the experiment was preliminary and just a proof of concept.

The experiment, he said, "marks a significant first step toward achieving our vision to ensure food security for generations to come, while preserving our natural resources". However, Aleph's Yoav Reisler said that the company planned to build on the experiment and make synthetic beef steaks available on terra firma using large-scale "bio-farms".
