Ash Barty has described her move back to tennis as the best decision she has ever made after being awarded the 2019 Don Award for Australian Sportsperson of the Year.
Barty, therefore, joins an elite list of legends to have picked up the award, including athlete Cathy Freeman, swimmer Ian Thorpe and two-time men's US Open champion Pat Rafter.
She is well on track to become the first Australian since Lleyton Hewitt in 2002 to end the year with the No.1 tennis ranking.
Margaret Court was the last woman to end the year at No.1 in 1973.
"It was a decision I needed to make to take some time away from tennis... but I think coming back to tennis is the best decision I've ever made because to be honest I was a pretty bad cricketer".
She wants to have a big finish to the year, with the WTA finals at the end of this month in Shenzhen, China.
In accepting the award, Barty reflected on her frustration with tennis during 2015-16, when she switched to cricket and played with the Brisbane Heat in the first season of the WBBL.
