Southwest, American extend Boeing 737 Max absence to early March

United Airlines, the other U.S. 737 MAX operator, had thus far cancelled flights into January, although it may yet have to extend that time frame.

MCAS was created to compensate for the 737 Max having larger engines than previous 737 generations.

Southwest said Friday that it will keep its Max out of its schedule until March 6, about a month longer than previously planned, citing continued uncertainty.

Southwest extended its grounding by way of March 6, 2020, whereas American extended it till finally March 5.

Reuters reported this week that USA and European regulators will need to return to a Rockwell Collins facility in Iowa to complete an audit of Boeing's software documentation after regulators found gaps and substandard documents.

The announcement comes after an FAA audit found information missing from documentation Boeing submitted to regulators explaining its fixes to the MAX, according to a source familiar with the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Boeing didn't immediately reply to a ask for for comment Friday.

Southwest Chief Executive Gary Kelly has said he is "not happy" with the MAX situation.
