Well, sports betting or fixing is no more a case, which falls under cheating sections, as Sri Lanka passed a bill saying that Sports Betting and Fixing is now equal to crime, which may give at least 10-year Jail for the individual.

Sri Lanka parliament passed all three readings of a bill, "Prevention of Offences related to sports" criminalising several offenses relating to match-fixing, becoming the first South Asian nation to do so on Monday. Betting on sports matches hosted by Sri Lanka was already illegal.

In addition, it is now also illegal for former players (and others involved in sports) to provide corrupt figures access to current players. Offences related to corruption in sports will carry a prison term of up to 10 years, as well as various fines.

The provision appears in part to target the former president of Sri Lanka Cricket, Thilanga Sumathipala, who was until recently a member of the organisation´s executive committee and whose family owns a gambling business.

He was the third Sri Lankan player charged for violating the ICC´s anti-corruption code, following charges levelled against former captain and ex-chief selector Sanath Jayasuriya, and former paceman Nuwan Zoysa.

As per the new bill, people who "provide inside information", "deliberately misapply rules" including pitch curators is illegal.

The latest legislation comes months after Fernando said that the game's local governance was riddled with corruption from top to bottom and the ICC considered the 1996 world champions as one of the world's most corrupt cricketing nations.

Earlier, players were required to report corrupt approaches to ICC's ACU under ICC Code.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SC) have taken a bold step by making tougher penalties for match-fixing and tightened sports betting regulations in an attempt to stamp out the corruption scandals that have plagued the national team in the past few years. Jayasuriya was slapped a two-year ban for failing to co-operate with the ICC with a match-fixing probe, while Zoysa got a suspension for his alleged involvement in match fixing.

Fast bowler Dilhara Lokuhettige was also suspended in 2018 for corrupt practices during a tournament in 2017.

Sri Lanka's cricket has been under investigation by the ICC's ACU since 2017.
