BMW details i4 electric vehicle, stresses next-gen advances

The i4, which should be shown in production form sometime in 2021, will use the new generation eDrive technology - the fifth in line - that should give the auto a range of more than 600 km (373 miles).

BMW's fifth-generation eDrive technology also includes a newly designed, low-mounted high-voltage battery featuring the latest battery cell technology, an extremely flat design, and optimized energy density.

The i4 will be powered by a 390kW electric motor, which, as BMW is keen to point out, is a few kilowatts shy of the 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 used in the X5 M50i and others.

The new model, due to go into production in 2021 following the forthcoming iX3, will be the German firm's first electric saloon.

By 2023, the BMW Group will have 25 electrified models, including plug-in hybrids. BMW reckons that the combo will team up to offer around 373 miles (600 km) of range, an impressive Model S-matching figure, though we assume BMW is deriving it from the generous WLTP standard.

The i4's 390kW electric motor supposedly puts out 523 brake horsepower, allowing the vehicle to go from 0-100 km/h in four seconds. BMW is, however, confirming those numbers as actual production targets, not just pie-in-the-sky concept vehicle figures. Capable of a 150 kW charge, it is able to replenish 80 percent of its operating capacity in 35 minutes.

Something to look forward to: The EV market is gaining more entrants by the minute, and BMW's i4 is just one of the three cars that the automaker plans to introduce in the near future.

In terms of final design, the i4 is said to be based on BMW's i Vision Dynamics concept (2017) and the Concept 4 Series Coupé (2019).
